Are you someone who can't put down a good book? Collector of rare, antiquarian or collectible books or interested in getting started? Then check out Rare Book Week , which is being held in Melbourne from 17th to 27th July 2014. Various activities are being held at libraries, literary and historical societies and bookshops throughout Melbourne during this period. It is a major attraction for book collectors, librarians and all who have a love of words, print on paper and literary heritage.

The good news is, all activities are FREE.

Some of the activities occurring during Rare Book Week are:
- Rare Book Discovery Day on Saturday 19th July (11.00am - 2.00pm), to which visitors may bring up to three items for discussion and appraisal by a panel of informed professionals. This is being held at Activity Room A, Melbourne Museum;
- a presentation by Richard Overell (Rare Books Librarian, Monash University) called 'Dust Jackets - You Can Judge a Book by its Cover', which is being held at the Melbourne Athenaeum at 6.00pm on 22nd July. Richard will explore the art of jacket design from the 1860s to the present. His presentation coincides with an exhibition of dust jackets at Matheson Library, Monash University. Bookings to attend his presentation are required; and
- Retro Story Time: an opportunity for you to share with your child the stories you loved while you were growing up. Stories will be read by staff from the Melbourne Library Service (various times and locations).

See the website for full details.

The climax to Rare Book Week is the Rare Book Fair , which takes place from 25th to 27th July, at the University of Melbourne's Wilson Hall. At the Book Fair, you will have the opportunity to view and purchase rare and unusual books, maps and prints, as well as manuscripts, photographs and other historical paper-based items. 37 antiquarian booksellers from Australia, the UK and the USA are participating in this event.

Over 3000 people attended Rare Book Fair in 2013, and more than $1 million of items were sold. For a list of the sellers who will be represented at the Rare Book Fair in 2014, see the website .

The Rare Book Fair operates during the following hours:

Friday 25th July: 6.00pm - 9.00pm,
Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July: 10.00am - 5.00pm.

Again, entry is FREE.
