Lockdown productivity
Robyn Bauer has been busy. Lockdown was hard for the lack of social contact and cultural events but she made up for it by collecting those "things" around her that reminded her of other times and brought back memories and stories from her own life and those around her. She was the artist in residence at the Botanic Gardens in 2019 and was about to open her exhibition when the first lockdown took that opportunity away from her.

Now she is in her studio and gallery and inviting us all into this wonderful space, which is defined by colour and creativity. Her exhibition, which covers work from her lockdown days till today, is all on display from the 19th to the 6th of November.

Her Gallery is at 54 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington 4064. Do go along and enjoy the popping artwork, the furniture and curios, which are all on display as well as in the artwork. A little quiz perhaps for children finding the actual curio and the artwork that contains it?

I walked into the gallery, where Out of the Blue expands across the entire entrance - more on that shortly, but it is turning the corner into this space that filled me with joy.

She is there every day from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 400 pm and she is very happy to show you around and talk about the artwork. I chatted to her in her studio and marvelled at the fact that she had colour coded her books - she changes them from time to time - that is an artist's eye and license for you!

There is so much to enjoy, the intense and strong series of still life work with oils many of which were produced in lockdown.

The more delicate garden series, which I thought were very attractive and serene, depicting water lilies, lotus flowers and orchids among others. They would make a thoughtful present for a loved one.

A whole section of intense black and white drawings of trees, backyards in Queensland and mighty plants.

To the massive and complex "Out of the Blue" tableau at the entrance, which needs careful consideration for all that it reveals and includes. There is human history and natural history. Depictions of fig trees, Brisbane scenes, lyrebirds and owls and even the extinct Thylacine features. Each panel concentrates on a theme and some are reproduced in the totality of this exhibition.

And not forgetting the paintings of Paddington which are all so familiar to those who know this neighbourhood.

These are all beautifully displayed and vibrant in their settings and the jacaranda on the terrace in full bloom, the lovely bird cages and other artefacts dotted around almost call you to join Robyn in her creative journey.

You can easily immerse yourself in this setting. It is a good time to go and visit this very expansive exhibition. While there, I was invited to go to the powder room to see more art on display, This time belonging to her daughter Sarah Matsuda, who creates some gentle paintings of graceful women and ballerinas.

I’ll go to see this exhibition for sure. It’s looks so interesting. I used to teach her daughter years ago.
