The Rapid Creek Café is run by a Japanese Darwin local. People travel from near and far to go to this little Japanese café. It's situated at the Rapid Creek shops and there is ample parking close by. The numbers 4 &10 Buses also have a bus stop, 20 metres walk from the Rapid Creek Cafe. The Rapid Creek shops are located on Bagot Road and are a hub of activity.
Next door to the Rapid Creek Café, you will find the Rapid Creek famous Foodland (also run by a long-running Territorian family of three brothers).
There is ample room to sit down. Don't let it's simple indoor decor deceive you. The best food in Darwin is often placed with the simplest settings. Once you order, remember to pick up your fork and spoon, or chopsticks if you choose. There is also a tap where you can pick up a plastic cup and grab some tap water. The staff also don't mind if you go back repeatedly to get some more tap water. They realise that it's hot outside!
There is a small range of salads, as well as California hand rolls. Then there is the menu. Think tempura, katsu, including his famous curry, salads and some standard noodles and rice dishes. It's compact but packs a delectable punch. You can also buy classic condiments like wasabi, Japanese mayo, dessert and classic Japanese drinks, including that awesome Japanese lemonade.
I personally love sitting inside, because then you get to see the myriad of people that live in Darwin. It's also lovely and cool inside with minimal air conditioning. Even though it's no frills, if you eat in, you'll still get your food brought out to your table. I've had many a pleasant conversation with the famous owner of this special café. The owner develops relationships with all of his regular customers.
My personal favourites and regular takeaways are his famous scallops and his chicken katsu. He cooks the scallops to perfection and the katsu curry sauce echoes my adopted Japanese mum's sauce.
This café caters to both eat in and takeaway and has restricted business hours.
One of my favourite places for Japanese in Darwin. Where's your favourite Japanese place in Darwin?
