If you ever want to escape the city and head out of town to the stunning Dandenong Ranges, there is a lovely little town called Olinda, Victoria. You wind through the beautiful fern trees and gum tree covered hills to arrive in a delightful historic town. And on a cold winter's day, the food on share is warm and yum.

I stopped in recently at Olinda Ranges Cafe after a massage at Nourish Wellbeing and discovered a warm fire, delightful ambience and a delicious mushroom risotto.

And there is always something new on the specials board. You must take a look.

Or if coffee and cake is all you are after, they have a range of delectables on display you can choose from. And they have accolades for their coffee blend. If you are a coffee connoisseur, plot your course and make it a date now.

Ranges use to be the General Store in 1910. It was started by Jack (John William) Dodd and was one of three buildings that initially established this historic town. You can just feel you are surrounded by the depth of Australian History here. I wonder if they have a ghost. I should ask.

Ranges is on the Main Street of Olinda, but has its own private parking around the corner and out the back and a veranda for summer alfresco dining. And because Olinda is so popular for visitors on the weekend, you will want to take advantage of that car park.

The veranda also caters as a place for your dogs to sit while you enjoy a sip of local wine or crisp beer and homemade fare.

This is a delightful place to lunch with the ladies or take the kids, as just around the corner there is an old fashioned lolly shop and toy store with local artisan suppliers and something besides plastic fantastic Barbie. For mums there is the newest fashion on the high street, natural all-Australian made skin products, antiques and exotic wares from overseas and Australian gifts and art any friend or family member would adore.

This tiny town is worth the explore. I bought my very first artwork in this town. It was a watercolour painting of two cockatoos in a tree by Vida Pearson. It still proudly hangs on the wall 30 years later. A timeless piece of Australiana. Your treasure is here, come find it and enjoy a wonderful family day.

Serving breakfast from 8.30 -12.00pm every day
Dinner Friday & Saturday from 5.30pm (currently closed at nights)
All day snacks available until 5.00pm
Lunch served daily from 12.00pm until 5.00pm
Fully licensed and BYO. BYO is so rare and special. Take advantage of it.

A big bonus is they use locally supplied produce, beyond fresh, almost still alive. Only one thing I could say more; I wish that scrumptious mushroom risotto was a standard on the menu, not just a special.
