Mount Dandenong has become a very popular tourist attraction, and attracts many visitors each week. One of the places I recommend to try upon your next visit is Ranges, located along Mt. Dandenong Tourist road in Olinda. In partnership with Credo's restaurant, Ranges is one of the larger eateries located along Olinda's main strip. Credo's is more upmarket, while Ranges offers a far more relaxed atmosphere. As a side note, Ranges has also taken steps to promote their business through deals with some of the local B&B's, such as Lochiel Estate.
Good coffee and a warm fire. www.ranges.com.au
Open every day for until dinner (which is on offer from Tuesday – Saturday), Ranges provides a range of options for all kinds of situations, from a casual conversation over coffee, to breakfasts and proper dinners, even for weddings and functions. Reasonably priced, you won't be paying over $30 for a full dinner.
The restaurant itself is well laid out, catering to small get-togethers and larger groups, with a fire place and fully-stocked bar. On days with good weather, you also have the opportunity to sit outside on the patio and enjoy a view of the local shops, while also appreciating how close you are to the forest.
On the con side, this restaurant does get very busy, and it's not uncommon to be asked to wait during peak periods. However, as its location is so close to local stores, you won't be left short for distractions. I have also found that the owners have struggled from time to time with bee/wasp nests around the patio, and from time to time the menu is rotated. While this does allow for a new experience each time for the occasional visitor, occasionally the regulars lose out on some old favourites.
All in all, this is definitely a restaurant to visit, presenting a relaxed, yet luxurious opportunity to experience some fine food in the midst of all that Mount Dandenong has to offer. For more information, and to view the menu, visit www.ranges.com.au.
