Event: -
Come along and taste this food and learn about the culture
It is that time of year again - Ramadan - time when the day time fasting begins. For those people who are not familiar with this, it is the ninth month of the Muslim year, during which strict fasting is observed from dawn to sunset.

Ramadan is supposedly the most joyful month of the year, and the month ends with the greatest celebration of all, the breaking of the fast. This is called Eid al-Fitr, and at this time around the world, Muslims celebrate with lights and decorations and of course, food!

This event will be held on 13th May 2019 and every day thereafter until 6th June 2019, at Haldon Street and Railway Parade, Lakemba.

Whether you are breaking your fast or just wanting to taste new foods, experiences and culture, Lakemba is a good place to be this Ramadan to share all that Iftar in Australia has to offer.

Lakemba's Ramadan festivities have become bigger and better attended over the years. The food vendors cook their special food on the footpath. There are always crowds flocking down to break their fast and celebrate late into the night.

Lakemba has become Sydney's best place to celebrate and experience Ramadan. The road closures around Lakemba will be on Saturday 11th, 18th and 25th May 2019, and Saturday 1st June.

There will be shuttle buses provided on Saturdays 11th, 18th, 25th May and 1st June. These will run between 6:30 pm and 2:00 am and will leave every thirty minutes. Why not avoid the stress of trying to find street parking by leaving your car and using this free service brought to you by the City of Canterbury Bankstown.

Buses will run approximately every 30 minutes from Campsie (Shakespeare Street Carpark) and Roselands (opp Lantern Club) dropping off (and picking up) at the bus stop on Haldon Street near Railway Parade, Lakemba.

The Council has partnered with Taste Food tours to offer a Mini Taste of the Ramadan Night Markets in Lakemba. If you want to explore the Night Markets, this tour will provide an introduction, as well as food samples, to the stalls and the area. For ticket information, please click on this link.

On this tour you will do the following:

Guided introduction to the Markets and the stalls with local guides. You will meet stall holders and locals on the busiest night.
Generous tasting samples of dishes, some that are only available from the night markets
Learn about the history of the night markets and the local community

You could win one of five double passes to see Aladdin!

1. Take a photo at Ramadan Nights Lakemba between 5th and 20th May.

2. Upload it to Facebook here or Instagram with the hashtags #whereinterestinghappens and #ramadannightslakemba.

3. Make sure the post is public, so that organisers can see it.

4. Five winners will be selected at random.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown would like to thank the following businesses for their support:

Darwich Butcher
Shawarma Albaik
Al Sultan Butcher
Street Gear
Broaster Chicken
Al Fayhaa Chicken

This is going to be a great event even if you are not Muslim - you can learn more about this religion plus taste their delicious street foods.
