Queen Victoria Women's Centre

Raise the Bra Female Comedy Showcase kicked off with Tinder Tales at the Queen Victoria Women's Centre.

Amna Bee opened the night with her tales of dating apps and lovers. Originally from Pakistan via Canada Amna Bee developed Raise the Bar Comedy nights in Melbourne to give women a platform to show their work with a focus on intersectionality. Behind Amna's beautiful smile is a dry wit warming up the audience for a night of laughs with some dating horror stories.

Is it possible to find love without a dating app?
Janty Blair is a proud Butchulla, Mununjhali, and Woppaburra woman who won the Deadly Funny Grand Final 2022 at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Since then Janty has toured Australia and overseas with her endearing and self-deprecating humour. Janty reminisced about her former days of dating, over a few drinks at the local pub. Janty talked about her love of football players all different types of men, and navigating dating apps with her adult son. Jainty's love of swiping right has resulted in meeting many people, and someone special, giving hope to those who are afraid to try dating apps.

How do you know if your date is a liar?
Should we carry Wonder Woman's golden lasso in our handbag? The simple answer is Yes and carry a spare. Sashi Perera gave an extraordinary glimpse into her long-distance international relationship with a pathological liar. This tragic tale warns of how charm, love bombing, and absence can be tools of deception. Amazingly, Sashi is still here to tell the tale with her huge smile, wry wit, and happy ending.

Sonia Di Iorio closed the night with sordid tales of dating online. Nothing is off-limits with Sonia, but boundaries and consent are important. Sonia's bolshy approach to feminist dating is upfront, with a no-b*llsh*t approach. Growing up with an Italian Mum, the dating app era is certainly very different from traditional rites of passage to marriage. Sonia is funny and the audience couldn't help but burst at the seams with raucous laughter at her experiences of dating apps.

There is something for everyone in the upcoming line-up of Raise the Bra comedy at the 2024 Melbourne's International Comedy Festival:
Mum's the Word 29 March
Guilty Pleasures 30 March
Black Widow 4 April
Career Day 5 April
Dysfunctional Families 6 April

So grab your Mum, sisters, aunts, boyfriend, partner, husband, wife, brothers, and Dad and hear some of the most amazing and contemporary female Australian comedians strut their stuff.

Raise the Bar Comedy monthly showcase spotlights the best and brightest women and non-binary comedians from Melbourne and beyond.
