As I write this, dark clouds have gathered overhead and a gentle autumn rain is falling over Canberra.

I love rainy days in autumn. For me, the days seem to have a different energy and pace, a different kind of feel. Something that is cosy and snug and warm and makes you think of home.

Of course, we are all now staying mostly at home thanks to coronavirus, so these rainy days may not have such a romantic feel to them. And if you have children, then these rainy days are definitely not romantic at all!

However, we can still ease ourselves into the energy of these rainy days. We can move at a slower pace, let the rain refresh and renew our spirits, savour the autumn mood, and enjoy being cosy and warm and snug at home.

Here are twelve ways how you can get into the rainy day mood the next time it rains your way.

1. Make yourself a cup of tea, coffee, hot chocolate or grab a glass of wine, and sit in a comfortable spot in front of a window and enjoy the rain.

2. Listen to rainy day tunes to get you in the mood. Rainy day jazz is perfect. Or why not listen to the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald? I love listening to her on a rainy day. You can also try Norah Jones, Nina Simone, Michael Buble, Chopin and Beethoven to get you in the rainy day kind of mood.

3. Spend the day knitting, crocheting, making a mosaic, or doing any kind of crafting. Especially if you have kids, otherwise they'll drive you up the walls.

4. Read a classic novel that will get you in the rainy day mood. I'm thinking Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte or Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Also anything by Edgar Allan Poe. I also like reading the plays of Norweigan playwright Henrik Ibsen on rainy days, as well as the Narnia chronicles by CS Lewis. Harry Potter is perfect too for rainy days.

5. Watch a 'rainy day kind of movie'. I'm thinking black and white films, and classic films like anything by Alfred Hitchcock, The Seventh Seal by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, and any film by Japanese film director and screenwriter Akira Kurosawa. How about Breakfast at Tiffany's and anything else with Audrey Hepburn in it? And what about romcoms like Bridget Jones' Diary and Four Weddings and A Funeral? There's also Amelie, the Harry Potter films, a Studio Ghibli animation such as Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away, and every Jane Austen film adaptation. The Sound of Music is good too, as well as Mary Poppins, and yes, Singing in the Rain! Of course, if you have children, then any children's movie is a rainy day kind of movie!

6. Complete a jigsaw puzzle.

7. Play a board game.

8. Bake a cake, cupcakes, cookies, anything. Just get baking. Baking and rainy weather seem to go well together.

9. Make a bowl of soup, stew, slow-cooked meal, roast, or curry. They're perfect on these chilly autumn days. If you don't like to cook, then support your local restaurant during this pandemic and order some hot food from them.

10. Play with your Lego. You don't have to have kids to enjoy Lego, so get constructing!

11. Go outside and jump in those muddy puddles. Put on your raincoats, hats and boots, get out your umbrellas, and go outside, find some puddles and jump in them! It's lots of fun, and kids shouldn't be the only ones doing it!

Finally,

12. Go for a walk. While you've got your rain gear on, and provided it's not absolutely dumping with rain, why not head out for a socially distanced walk in your neighbourhood? Marvel at the beauty of autumn in the rain.

%%"Raining, raining, all night long.
Sometimes loud, sometimes soft, just like a song.
There'll be rivers in the gutters and lakes along the street,
It will make our lazy kitty wash his little dirty feet.
The roses will wear diamonds like kings and queens at court,
But the pansies all get muddy because they are.so short.
I'll sail my boat tomorrow in wonderful new places,
But first I'll take my watering pot and wash the pansies' faces."
