As Creedence Clearwater sang:
Long as I remember, the rain been comin' down
Clouds of mystery pourin' confusion on the ground
G
ood men through the ages tryin' to find the sun
And I wonder, still I wonder, who'll stop the rain?
Well, the answer is.
You'll stop the rain.
You have no raincoat or umbrella. But you don't get wet. It sounds a bit like a riddle but it's not.
In fact, just as Moses parted the Red Sea, wherever you walk, the rain simply stops short before it touches you, even though you are in a downpour.
Welcome to Random International's monumental artwork, Rain Room. It is a 100-square-metre field of continuous rainfall that engages all the senses. Millions of water droplets respond to your presence by ceasing to fall wherever they detect you moving, allowing you to be fully immersed in the rain but completely protected from it.
This installation has already wowed half a million patrons worldwide, including in London (Barbican), New York (MoMA), Los Angeles (LACMA), and Shanghai (Yuz Museum). Now it's Melbourne's turn to experience the downpour.
How it works
Motion sensors detect the movements of the human body as you navigate through the darkened underground space, becoming performers in this intersection of art, technology and nature.
**The Artistic Context
**
To me, this sounds like fun. But if you are heavily into art, this is the stated aim of the installation. '%%Rain Room is a physical experience that both deprives and intensifies the senses. It invites an exploration of the individual actions and emotions that can be generated by this unique, counter-intuitive environment. The installation also seeks to explore how human relationships with each other and nature are increasingly mediated through technology.'
Where's it on?
Room Room is at the purpose-built Jackalope Pavilion on the corner of Acland Street and Jackson Street, St Kilda. A creative space that showcases public art and activations in an urban context.
And yes, if you have heard the term
Jackalope before, this space is connected with the famous upmarket hotel on the Mornington Peninsula that also showcases art. Below is a photo I took when I was wandering around the grounds.
