Rendezvous at Raglan

"To evoke in oneself a feeling one has once experienced, and having evoked it in oneself, then, by means of movements, lines, colours, sounds, or forms expressed in words, so to transmit that feeling that others may experience the same feeling - this is the activity of art."

That was what Tolstoy had to say in his essay What Is Art?

Feeling the lure of the weekend and encouraged by the cold and clammy weather these days I decided to spend Thursday evening at the launch of Raglan Street gallery's first open art prize.

Pondering the works of art on display in this quaint little gallery, I was immediately reminded of what Tolstoy had said.

Portraits, perspectives, digital prints, Indian contemporary, surrealism and stunning symbolism were on display and for someone like me who's no art aficionado it was definitely something I could relate to.

Not just paintings

Located in North Melbourne close to the North Melbourne Arts House the Raglan Street gallery is the creation of 4 talented energetic individuals Sen, Ethan, Katie and Julia who are artists themselves. Speaking with the genial Sen (ask him for his complete name) I got to know that the gallery is run as a not for profit organisation primarily targeting up and coming artists. The gallery can be rented out as well by artists for a negotiable rate.

One of the newer galleries in town, its already hosted 3-4 exhibitions in the last few months. If you need a crash course in art without visiting the overwhelming NGV or one of the bigger galleries in Melbourne and you are tired of street graffiti then the Raglan Street gallery, with its ultra compact space divided into 2 levels and sharing space with a book store which adds to the overall ambience of the place, is the place to go.

Having said that I must say that there are over 40 pieces of art on display and opening night during the 1st half hour had no fewer than 50 art enthusiasts like me crowded in.

One or two of the works on display focus with undisguised candour on the very disturbing current state of affairs, so you would be well advised to forewarn any impressionable mind you are taking along.

Raglan street is more of an alley off Errol Street in North Melbourne and I missed it the first time I drove down. You should have free parking since the gallery is open till late in the evening.

The exhibition is on from the 16th till the 30th of May. Opening hours can be confirmed by calling up the gallery.
