Love the music of Radio Eastern 981 then support them today
Radio Eastern is one of the most popular community radio stations in Melbourne and has been running for almost 30 years.
Long-term Councillor, Mayor, Citizen of the Year and Victorian Member of Parliament, Peter McArthur was part of the founding group of Radio Eastern 98.1 in 1991. The station resides in the Wyreena Community Grounds on Hull Road, Croydon. He and the Premier at the time were instrumental in preventing the Wyreena Historical buildings from being bulldozed. It took the founding group 16 years (since 1974) to get the broadcast licence and they are still operating today to delighted audiences of over 200,000 a day (as per a 2014 survey). At one stage, the station almost burned to the ground, but the volunteers saved it and rebuilt it even better and more popular than before.

The station now is comprised of four radio studios and one large outside broadcast van. Its major offerings of music are in all genres of easy listening music from the 1920's to today, including Big Band, Musicals, Jazz, Blues, Classical, Opera, Rock and Roll, Continental European, A Cappella, Melbourne Choir, Nostalgia, and of course the award-winning EFL and Cricket programs.
But they are desperate for funds to "build stronger links with the community" and upgrade the transmitting equipment and obtain portable outside broadcast equipment, so they can get out and about in the community for interviews more often and attend local community events.
Roger Broadbent and Julia Zammit - members of the Radiothon Committee
So Radio Eastern FM is organising its first Radiothon, which will be held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March 2018 to help raise much-needed funds. Join them for a sausage sizzle on Sunday at the 25th of March from 12 pm onwards.
Because they are a 'Not-For-Profit' community radio station (which is staffed entirely by volunteers), they have to raise enough money through donations.
Since they began regular broadcasts in 1990, Radio Eastern FM has supported our community through local sports broadcasts, informing you of local community activities and bringing you live coverage of local festivals and shows. This support has extended to thousands of organisations.
Now they asking you to help by donating to a Radiothon, as they go about Building Stronger Links with the community.
You can do that in a number of ways.
