Racism. It Stops Here: Public Lecture
You may have heard of the
Racism. It Stops With Me Campaign which aims to raise awareness about racism and its effects on people and the community. As part of this growing campaign QUT is holding a public lecture on March 23 at Gardens Point with Australian Human Rights Commission's Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Tim Soutphommasane as guest speaker.
According to research cited on the website for the
Racism. It Stops With Me campaign 90% of people surveyed said that racism was a very important issue facing Australians and 20% had experienced racism. It seems that while we like being a multicultural nation and enjoying all that goes with this we still have a way to go before we all live in harmony.
Dr Soutphommasane is particularly well qualified to speak on the subject. He has a PhD and Master of Philosophy from the University of Oxford and is a first class Honours graduate from the University of Sydney. Prior to joining the Commission he was a political philosopher at the University of Sydney.
The campaign is not only about raising awareness but in giving people the knowledge and skills to take action whe confronted by racism. The website provides examples of things you can say or do if you hear someone else being racist. It has a number of great tips for practical action depending on how safe the situation is. It also has links to other websites and some great resources.
It also calls on organisations to become formal campaigners and to pledge their commitment to tolerance and against racism. QUT is one of nine Queensland Universities that I supporting this event. The others are University of Southern Queensland, Griffith University, University of Queensland, Australian Catholic University, University of the Sunshine Coast, James Cook University, Central Queensland University and Bond University.
If you want to sign up to support the campaign as either an individual or an organisation see the website
