Rachel woke in a shallow grave in the woods, and after digging herself out, has been searching for the secret of how she died and why she is back. Her best friend, Jet, was killed in the horrific accident at the end of volume 1, but, like Rachel, she awakens as undead, though in need of some repairs to make sure her head stays on.
Zoe, in Rachel Rising Volume 2.
In Volume 2, the plot thickens. We learn that Zoe, the child who has caused so much death is not really a ten year old girl, just the shell of one, now much older and possessed by a demon named Malus. We also learn the identity of the mysterious blonde woman and her plans for the town of Manson, which must pay for the murders of 100 women hanged as witches 300 years ago. It is also revealed why Rachel was brought back from the dead, though what she will do with this dubious gift remains to be seen.
Rachel Rising Volume 2: Fear No Malus is very creepy and contains a fair amount of death and gore. The art continues to be impressive, and the storytelling is top notch. With so many questions still unanswered, this book will pull you in and make you want to read the whole series.
