"Rabbits! Giant mutant rabbits!" The opening words and I was absolutely captured. I have so much praise to give this musical production that I'm unsure where to start. I promise not to spoil anything, but I would highly recommend you check the show out for yourself and enjoy the full experience.
Okay, first things first - this show is definitely worth your time and money. There are shows where I think to myself "I had a good time, but would I recommend someone part with their hard-earned cash and relaxation hours to see this?" The answer is yes. Do it. You will not regret it.
So to start off my review, something my friend and I both agreed on was the sheer quality of the performers. They all had fantastic voices and gave great performances. I'll admit I have a cheeky bad habit of picking out my favourite singer or dancer in a performance and watching them for the whole show but for this show, I genuinely couldn't pick just one. I think the cast of this show did a fabulous job and are all incredibly talented.Something I do want to jump in and say is that I would pay good money to watch an entire show of just the character of Rob Muskus played by Andy Leonard (who happened to be one of the creators of the show by the way, kudos to you sir, you've done an excellent job). Absolutely fantastic performance and had me in stitches throughout. If anyone who works on this show sees this review, I would genuinely love a copy of the soundtrack, the songs were great and well executed, and 'King of Mars' is my new jam.
Now for the plot, if you love dark humour and sci-fi plots this is the show for you. If you don't, I would still recommend it anyway as it's a worthwhile watch. I was chuckling the whole way through the first half and watching through my fingers in a "oh no they wouldn't, they couldn't, they did!" kind of way. Loved it.The long and the short of it is that the rabbits on Earth have mutated into giant creatures, and a trillionaire Rob Muskus has concocted a project to terraform Mars. Rob (never Mr Muskus) with lead scientist Dr Janice Evelyn and everyday man Adam are now travelling to be the first humans on Mars with complications and machinations to come!
The show is absolutely packed with references, tropes and jokes. Best of all it's a homegrown made and produced show. I will admit that am a complete sucker for a good quality Aussie reference thrown into my pop culture. My friend and I kept chatting about the content and the themes for hours after we had finished watching. This show, although a little bit ridiculous and absurdly funny, really does tackle interesting concepts and leaves you engaged and thinking to yourself "what would I do in that situation". The whole night had such a fun vibe and we had a great time. It was a real treat to have a live band be part of the show, and deciding to sit in the front row we were right up close to the performers throughout the show, which really helped with the immersion (but be aware, if you do this, you might get a face full of a fog machine!).
Okay, now to the nitty gritty reality of how to get to the show. Located at the Flight Path Theatre in Marrickville it can be a little tricky to get to. You can walk from Stanmore train station (about a 15-minute walk) but be aware the streets can be pretty dark, so bring a buddy and maybe a flashlight. You can also catch a bus from Newtown if walking isn't your thing.
There's also a bus stop right outside the theatre, and you can take the 428 straight back to Central after the show. Alternatively, if you'd prefer to drive there is parking available around the theatre, but there are limited spots right out front so I'd arrive early if I were you.The Flight Path Theatre also provides a plethora of drink options and snacks for you to enjoy during the show. There's also a waiting area out front if you are the first person in your group to turn up.
All in all, I had a great experience watching this show, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to friends and fam. I will definitely be keeping an eye on this crew and any future shows they may produce.
