Stopping for a quick drink after work, on the way to the football or theatre? These small bars have an individual quirkiness that will get you in and draw you back.

Bank Street Social

Bank Street Social is styled like a prohibition-era US speakeasy. It is a multi-award winner- 2015 Advertiser "Best Small Bar" and 2018 City Awards "Best Nightlife Experience".

The extensive offerings of gin, wine, beer and whiskey are mostly locally made and there is room at the bar to sit and chat with the knowledgeable cocktail maker who will entice you to try something wildly exotic."The bar starts to get busy by 7pm" the manager tells me "and by 9pm it is usually full. We then put on a DJ". With a couple of cocktails under your belt, you will really feel like dancing.

Therapy Cocktail Bar

Therapy is a classy looking underground bar with exposed brickwork, leather seating and a funky bar.

Therapy cocktail menu has over one hundred exotically named drinking experiences and the staff are happy to find out your tastes and make a cocktail to suit.

The cocktails are categorised by the spirit, which makes choosing easy. The bar manager Josh tells me "the bestselling cocktails are the Nikki Webster (strawberry and pineapple based) and the Pavlova (basically a pavlova in liquid form with vodka)" but the cocktail that caught my eye is the Impeachment, which mixes bourbon, vanilla and peach!

Josh added "the name Therapy was chosen because what we offer is just that. Therapy- in a bottle. After a long day of work sometimes you may just want some cocktail therapy, otherwise gin, rum, whiskey or anything in a bottle therapy."

Therapy is a great place to stop on the way to a dinner or as the last stop before home for a cocktail and a chat.

Haines & Co

Do you know the difference between a bathtub gin and a classic gin? At Haines & Co you are in the right place. They offer a Gin101 Masterclass, 'your fast-tracked ticket to becoming a gin expert'. Held monthly, the gin experts take you on a juniper journey, educating you on the different varieties and garnishes to match your individual palate.

Haines & Co is a fabulous nautically themed bar opened in January 2015 by Marcus "The Admiral" Mottram.

Lots of boat trinkets make for a fun atmosphere and you can get into the vibe by ordering a Pirate Life beer or a Dark 'n' Stormy cocktail with lashings of Stolen Gold rum, lime and ginger beer or their special distilled rum punch.

The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and are happy to tempt you with something a little different.

It has outdoor seating to enjoy a sunny day or balmy evening. Combine a rum flavoured espresso martini and their signature homemade to-die-for Sea Pigs, sausage rolls with shiraz and black pepper chutney, for a very enjoyable visit.
