Mat Hatter Cosplay at Comic Con London, 2016, via Wikipedia.
Mad Hatter Day celebrates the Hatter from Lewis Carroll's absurd children's books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The expression "mad as a hatter" came from the sad fact that it was once common for hat makers to suffer from dementia as a result of close contact with mercury used in the making of felt for hats. The Hatter in Carroll's story is a jolly character who celebrates endless tea parties together with the March Hare and the Dormouse.
The day was established in 1986 by a group of computer technicians in Boulder, Colorado. The date was chosen in honour of the price tag on the Mad Hatter's Hat which says "10/6". In the UK the date would be the 10th of June, but since the day was established in America and Americans write the date the other way around it's the 6th of October.
You could celebrate by having a silly hat day at work as a charity fundraiser, or simply enjoying some jam tarts and tea.
Octopuses are incredible creatures. They have eight semi-autonomous arms equipped with chemoreceptors, which allow them to taste the things they are touching. They can either swim or walk along the ocean floor on their arms (or legs?) and can change colour to blend in with their surroundings or squirt ink to mask a quick getaway. They are intelligent and have been known to escape from captivity and have even been seen to use rudimentary tools. and They have existed since before the dinosaurs, but today the existence of many species is threatened by humans through overfishing.
You can celebrate World Octopus Day by visiting an aquarium, reading books or watching this educational video to learn more about these marvellous beasts.

The art of storytelling is as old as human civilisation. On this day in Scotland and Ireland libraries hold storytelling events for children. You can celebrate yourself at home by telling a story (or more than one) to a child, or even to some other adults. Sit by a campfire, or dim the lights and enjoy excercising your imagination.
