The twisted life of the Marquis de Sade
quills, mockingbird theatre, melbourne, marquis de sade, north melbourne, theatre, stage, performance art
Quills at Arts House, Meat Market, 5 Blackwood st, North Melbourne. 2 Aug to 15 Aug 2014

Presented by Mockingbird Theatre and a Victorian premier of Doug Wright's (an American Playwright) Obie Award-winning play, Quills is a highly provocative, violent, perverse and controversial story. It is simultaneously charged with thought-provoking philosophical tirades about the nature of man and is bound to set enquiring minds to ponder and draw responses and comments a-plenty from its audience. It is a presentation of a daring and provocative study of sexuality and madness. It's a case of 'what happens when the lunatics rule the asylum!'

Better known as Marquis de Sade, a notorious sexual libertine, this is the titillating journey of Alphonse François de Sade's salacious life and sadistically twisted mind.

This play is not for the faint hearted. It is directed by award-winning Mockingbird Theatre artistic director Chris Baldock and assisted by Soren Jensen. It tackles the imagined final days of Marquis de Sade, a French aristocrat, philosopher, writer and pornographer who in the lunatic asylum in 1814 passes time by wielding his quill. A prolific and eloquent writer, he spent more than 32 years of his life in various prisons and asylums and it was within those walls that the career that would become his legacy was forged.

Sadism is as synonymous with his name as the themes of sadomasochism, pedophilia, incest, sexual perversity, overt eroticism and torture are to his writings. Quills is a high velocity and wickedly funny ride into a twisted mind.

Quills is grand, theatrical and wickedly satisfying. It will penetrate the watcher to the very core - enter if you dare!"

Warning - the play contains violence, nudity, sexually explicit action and language. Adults only.
