Quiet Girl in a Noisy World is a collection of comics from 'Where's my Bubble?' bound together in a paperback book. It is 184 pages long and retails for between $14.99 and $24.99. The book spans three years of Tung's life from her final years in college up to present day.
The focus of the book is about Tung questioning why she struggles so much to socialise and fit in with her peers. Tung is an introvert but it takes her a while to figure that out.
Tung has been quiet her whole life. Her idea of fun is a cup of tea and an afternoon to herself wrapped up in a blanket and reading a brand new book.
Tung is not the sort of person who likes to socialise in large groups. She is more comfortable around her family or one or two very close and trustworthy friends.
She hates having to put her hand up in class to ask a question and working with people in groups and being forced to work in an open plan office. She craves silence and solitude and finds being forced to socialise exhausting and difficult.
When she does try to engage in conversation, she always worries that she will come across as socially awkward and that she will end up embarrassing herself.
Tung describes this feeling in the book as having social anxiety. She has struggled with it for years. Having social anxiety is feeling conflicted between going to an event and socialising with new people and staying home and hiding under your bed covers.
I really identified with Debbie Tung in Quiet Girl in a Noisy World. I've been an introvert my whole life. When I was in school, I didn't end up making any close friends until I was almost finished with high school. I hated working in groups and putting my hand up to ask a question in class. I was lonely and I did want to make friends but I was too shy and too socially awkward to approach people. I used to spend a lot of my spare time sitting by myself under a tree reading a book or working in the library.
It can be hard to be an introvert in an extrovert's world. A lot of people don't understand introverts. They think we're sad and that we need to get out of our comfort zone and that we would be happier if we acted more extroverted. All my life people have said things to me like "You're so quiet" and "You're so timid" and they would tell me to smile more. As a kid, I would often think to myself "Is something wrong with me? Do I need to change? Would I be happier if I were more extroverted?"
The best thing an introvert can hope for is to find someone who understands them and doesn't try to change them which is what happens to Tung in her book. Her partner is an extrovert who is happy to do socialising for her and to give her all the time alone she needs to re-charge her social batteries.
Tung's journey in Quiet Girl in a Noisy World is about her finding the courage to be herself and to embrace being an introvert.
Quiet Girl in a Noisy World does a great job explaining what it is like to be an introvert and how difficult it can be to struggle with social anxiety when you are an introvert surrounded by extroverts.
