is such a great science centre that it receives more visitors annually than the population of Canberra, and most of the kids who visit have no idea it's meant to be educational at all.

Sideshow Alley is a permanent gallery and has some extreme thrills including the Freefall Slide and the 360-degree swing - both of which are far too scary for many adults, let alone children!

At the other end of the scale is Mini-Q. Older kids and adults are not allowed inside unless they are with a child five years old or younger. During weekends and school holidays time-limited session tickets are allocated at the front desk because it is in huge demand.

Mini-Q is FANTASTIC. There is water play, a fully-enclosed mesh playground, several kid-scaled imaginative play areas, a section all about outer space, and quieter places for babies - although mine isn't bothered by much!

Strollers must be parked outside the Mini-Q gallery, but there are lockers activated by $2 coins (which are refunded after use) just outside the door.

If you have primary-aged kids, I strongly recommend the hilarious and informative shows - ask about times and topics at the front desk.

My personal favourite gallery is Awesome Earth, which has a really exciting Earthquake House, and caged lightning. The lightning is on a timer placed prominently in front of the enormous cage. Younger kids might find the noise frightening, especially if they don't get any warning. You can step outside the gallery and still see it, which is useful for getting an idea if your child would enjoy it or not.

As part of the parliamentary triangle, parking is now paid - allow at least $10. visits usually take about three hours.
