This September The Astor Theatre is holding a special Tarantino Retrospective .

It was back in 1992 when Quentin Jerome Tarantino came on the scene with the ground-breaking Reservoir Dogs, which he wrote, directed and starred in alongside Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi, Lawrence Tierney and Michael Madsen. With Reservoir Dogs Tarantino redefined American independent cinema and 'Stuck in the Middle with You' would be forever associated with the 'ear cutting' scene.

It's a shame Reservoir Dogs isn't in the forthcoming Astor Theatre September film program, particularly as it is one of the top ten films people lie about having seen . After the release of Reservoir Dogs, which did quite well on the international festival circuit and resulted in Tarantino being awarded the 'International Critics' Award' at the Toronto International Film Festival and 'ALFS Award at the London Critics Circle Film Awards,' Tarantino wrote the screenplay for True Romance, directed by Tony Scott and released in 1993 and the story for Natural Born Killers, directed by Oliver Stone and released in 1994.

In 1994 Pulp Fiction was released and Tarantino was awarded the prestigious Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) at the Cannes Film Festival. Pulp Fiction was also nominated for seven Academy Awards (Tarantino and co-writer Roger Avary were awarded Best Original Screenplay). Tarantino was something of a critic's darling at the time and Pulp Fiction was a cultural phenomenon and became one of the major film releases of the 90s. View Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert's take on Tarantino's success below.

Pulp Fiction will screen on Thursday, September 1 at 7:30pm.

Jackie Brown, an adaptation of the novel Rum Punch by American novelist Elmore Leonard, showcased Tarantino's love of blaxploitation cinema and featured an all star cast, including Pam Grier, Robert Forster, Robert De Niro, Samuel L. Jackson, Bridget Fonda and Michael Keaton. Like Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown was also a major critical success.

Jackie Brown will screen on Thursday, September 8 at 7:30pm.

Throughout the 90s Tarantino appeared in several films, including Desperado, Four Rooms (Tarantino wrote, directed and acted in ' The Man from Hollywood ' segment), From Dusk Till Dawn and Little Nicky.

Kill Bill (Vol. I & II) would reunite Uma Thurman and Tarantino and the film, which was released in two volumes in 2003 and 2004, showcased Tarantino's love of Hong Kong martial arts films and Italian spaghetti westerns. Both features were critically and commercially successful - but there were some 'critics' who found Kill Bill a bit too violent;

Kill Bill screens as a double feature on Thursday, September 15 at 7:30pm.

The following week, the Grindhouse double feature is screening. Planet Terror was directed by Robert Rodriguez and Death Proof was directed by Tarantino. Death Proof is a great action flick which features Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Rose McGowan and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Tarantino appears as Warren - the bar owner.

The Grindhouse double feature screens on Thursday, September 22 at 7:30pm.

Inglourious Basterds is the final feature of The Astor Theatre Tarantino Retrospective film program. Inglourious Basterds marks Tarantino's final collaboration with editor Sally Menke , who passed away in 2010. Menke was nominated for an Academy Award for her work on Inglourious Basterds in 2010. If you are familiar with Tarantino's feature films, you will know about the 'Hi Sally' reels;

The editing of Tarantino's feature films have always been seamless and impeccable, but in Inglourious Basterds, it was remarkable.

Controversial, outrageous, thrilling and masterpiece are a few words to describe the brilliance of Inglourious Basterds. Starring Mélanie Laurent, Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth and Christoph Waltz in his Academy Award winning role as Col. Hans Landa, Inglourious Basterds is a war film, which could have only been directed by Tarantino.

Inglourious Basterds screens on Thursday, September 29 at 7:30pm.

Tarantino's next feature Django Unchained will be released Christmas 2012, so this is the perfect opportunity to get your Tarantino fix until then.
