Queensland Symphony Orchestra has revealed its Season 2019 program. And I didn't just hear about the music, I got to experience it as well at a sneaky concert launch, where the Orchestra performed musical highlights from the upcoming year. Music Director Alondra de la Parra unveiled all the delights of the coming season and I'm here to tell you it's exciting. It is brilliant music played by excellent musicians and world-class conductors.

Chairman Chris Freeman AM praised the musicians' talent, commitment and training and I agree wholeheartedly after seeing them live. The performing arts play a major role in placing Queensland on the global musical calendar. The aim is music for everybody with an exciting program for 2019 proudly featuring world-renowned soloists and more Australian composers than ever before. I applaud APLNG, the sponsor of QSO which enables it to hold performances in rural areas in Queensland such as Chinchilla, Gladstone and Roma. The musicians deliver mentoring, tutoring and workshop sessions to the communities and provide opportunities for music students to play with them.

QSO's signature style is contrast. They will play one you love followed by another which you may find puzzling. You get to hear compositions you are familiar with and adore as well as getting to know new ones with a big range of emotions. I promise that young and old, whether new to orchestral music or a long-standing fan, you will be enthralled by beautiful music to suit all tastes.

SHOWCASED HIGHLIGHTS:
1. The New World
The first piece the Orchestra played came from The New World, part of the maestro and morning masterworks. Dvorak's dramatic Symphony No. 9 (From the New World) is majestic music inspired by the Americas. This late romantic symphony is one of classical music's most popular works. It "trumpeted" a new dawn for American music and pays animated homage to the pioneering frontier's wide open spaces, with its lovely fast pace. Mexican-born Alondra (which means "lark") conducted all the evening's music (except the Chamber Players). She puts so much energy into conducting that she was breathless when she took the mic.

2. Animal Kingdom
The next piece was by Brisbane composer Lana Katz-Chernin. Her Eliza and Prince excerpts from Wild Swans Suite is a salute to the diverse natural world. With soloist Warwick Adeney on violin, it began slow, quiet and sad, but like a bird in flight, it builds up to major glory, Animal Kingdom is part of the Music on Sundays program, and promises to be fun for the whole family. You can catch this on 16 June 2019 at QPAC and discover what a bee, a swan and a lark have in common.

3. The New World
Again from The New World maestro main series, came Copland's Appalachian Springs. This stirring vision of America seethes with boundless optimism. It's a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and the discovery of a new world is invigorating.

4. Chamber Players
Beethoven's String Quartet No. 4 in C sharp minor, Op 131 was played by a high calibre quartet of young musicians: Rebecca Seymour (violin), Shane Chen (violin), Bernard Hoey (viola) and Hyung Suk Bae (cello). This extraordinary performance without a conductor gave the talented four a chance to do something different and extend themselves. You too can hear the Chamber Players' Moonlit Revolution at the QSO Studio on 22 September 2019. Included will be the world premiere of Australian composer Bernard Hoey's New Work.

5. Timeless
From Timeless, the season finale came Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5 in E minor. This delightful symphony with its romantic tunes, striking instrumentals, ballet-like quality and explosive peaks, was an exciting and fitting finale to a superb night's entertainment by world-class musos. The Timeless Finale will end the 2019 season with a closing Gala Performance on Saturday 16 November. Which will also feature soloist Paul Lewis on Piano. Paul is the QSO's Artist In Residence for 2019. He is regarded as one of the greatest living pianists, so his appearances with QSO will be one of the year's musical highlights.
