So you've mastered the granny square and you've knitted up a few scarves but now you're looking for more. Well a workshop with the Queensland Spinners Weavers and Fibre Artists (QSWFA) may be the answer.

Located in Auchenflower, in the old Uniting Church and hall, QSWFA runs workshops in a variety of crafts and also operates an Emporium to sell beautiful wool and other materials as well as books. The group began in 1969 and due to the passion and dedication of its members has grown to the point it has its own permanent home where committed volunteers provide a friendly yet professional environment.

In 2013 the group offers workshops in printmaking, felting, dyeing, spinning, weaving, crochet and papercrafts. The workshops are run on weekends by accomplished artists. If you would like to try your hand at making felted objects (a personal favourite of mine) there are eight different workshops ranging from Lets Get Started on Felting , Nuno Felting, Three Dimensional Felting and Fabulous Felted Footwear. If you'd like to learn to dye your own wool you can learn plant dyeing, the Shibori technique and eco dyeing while there are several levels of weaving and spinning classes. If paper is your thing you can learn Monotyping, a form of spontaneous printmaking with found objects. I don't pretend to really know what all these crafts are but I'm starting with felting and plan to work my way through the others.

Artists from QSWFA will also be conducting classes at the Textile Art Academy Workshops, June 24-30 at St Peters Lutheran College Indooroopilly. Check out the Weekend Notes review here

You can join the QSWFA for a modest annual fee. This entitles you to discounted workshop fees and access to purchase materials from the beautiful emporium. This is very useful as the shop stocks materials that are hard to source anywhere else in Brisbane. Every time I visit I find my wallet is considerably lighter and my cupboards overflowing. I am also reminded how generous and supportive all the members are. They love involving new people and expanding their group.

In addition to running workshops the group runs an annual show called Fibrefest at the Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens and has regular meeting times for people interested in each craft. At these meetings members share their work and get support and ideas as well as having access to guest speakers.
