A week to celebrate our seniors - virtually - in Queensland

Queensland's annual celebration of seniors will be different this year! For the first time, since its inception more than sixty years ago, Queensland's Senior's Week is going virtual. 2020 marks the year where people need something to celebrate, but in the safest possible way. Covid-19 has seen many of the elderly in self-isolation and we, as a community, need to ensure that our seniors remain connected and feel loved.

Older people with little or no internet skills can feel more isolated from their friends, family and community. Some of these young-at-heart may need extra support to get online or help to build their digital skills. With this in mind COTA - Council of the Ageing - has co-ordinated a fabulous line-up of online and interactive events to assist our elderly and also to celebrate our beloved seniors for Senior Week, in Queensland.

Hosted by QPAC Scholar in Residence Professor Judith McLean, this free online event marks the start of Queensland Seniors Week 2020 and will include performances from some of QLD's most outstanding artists, western classical and traditional Asian fusion ensembles.

Gather your family and friends together, boil the kettle, unpack the treats and get ready to enjoy morning tea with Dame Quentin Bryce, Aunty Colleen Wall, Creative Director of Briefs Factory, Fez Fa'anana, and internationally renowned didgeridoo performer and pianist, David Williams.

Life is always better with music and dance! Image: QLD Ballet FB

Life is always better with music and dance! As part of Seniors Week 2020, Queensland Ballet has partnered with the QLD Government and COTA Queensland, to deliver a series of inclusive and meaningful ballet classes to be held on Sunday 23 August. Classes will be taught by Queensland Ballet's highly skilled Teaching Artists and be accompanied by live piano music.

All classes will take place at Queensland Ballet studios in West End and will be live-streamed, ensuring that no matter where you are, you will be en pointe. Join in on a special virtual ballet class for either beginners or intermediate ballet plus a jazz session.

Queensland Ballet's research has shown that ballet for seniors leads to positive wellbeing outcomes, particularly feeling more energetic, keeping in shape, awareness, posture, flexibility, as well as physical and overall wellbeing.
Whilst this event is FREE, please consider donating to the Queensland Ballet, who, like many others, are continuing to face challenging and uncertain times.
