The Queensland Pops Orchestra is proudly presenting a Gala Variety Concert as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Toowong Rotary Club.Held on Saturday 24 October 2015 at 7.30pm, Maestro Patrick Pickett has designed a concert program that will bring some of the most exciting and beautiful music to the stage.Taking place in the newly completed Performing Arts Centre at St Peters Lutheran College Indooroopilly, this exciting live music event will see a selection of highly talented students perform alongside the orchestra as part of the Integrated Learning Program. One particular highlight will be a performance on the schools new Stuart Piano, built in Australia from the stunningly beautiful Tasmanian Oak.Renowned Queensland Baritone Jason Barry-Smith will headline this concert event and will be joined by Soprano Katie Stenzel. Individually they will perform a diverse range of renowned works from Rossini, Mozart and Gilbert and Sullivan. Then as a duo, they will perform some of the great duets from opera, musical theatre and popular music.
This year's event also pays tribute to the Gallipoli landing with the Pops Orchestra and chorus from St Peters performing a new arrangement of the Last Post interwoven into Waltzing Matilda. This highly moving arrangement is by Australian composer Graham Lloyd. In this special segment of the concert there will also be an appearance by the Vocal Manoeuvrers Andrews Sisters, who will perform some of those wonderful songs that lifted the spirits in those troubled times.Grandeur and spectacle will be the order of the night with Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture providing a fitting end to this concert. This segment will including the Choir of St Peters along with the full orchestra and additional musicians in what promises to be an uplifting finale.
