Villages in China have been racing Dragon Boats for over 2000 years, but the modern era of dragon boat racing started in Hong Kong in 1976. There are dragon boat teams all around the world, and many in Brisbane. Having a go at this fun sport is as easy as turning up one of their free trial sessions.
We went to try dragon boating with the Lakes District Dragon Boat Association at Forest Lake in Brisbane's south. Like many other Dragon Boat clubs they hold open sessions where anyone can come and have a go.
Dragon boating is not that difficult with the main issue being coordination as all 20 paddlers in a standard racing dragon boat needs to paddle in sync with each other.
You can learn more about where to join dragon boat trials, clubs and events at the
website.
The Brisbane River Dragons run regular free introductory sessions on Saturdays at 7:30 am at the Colmslie Recreation Reserve. For more information see their
website .
Some Dragon Boat Facts
There are many different types of team long boats around the world, so interest in this Chinese sport has taken root in many countries.
In China dragon boats are usually raced during the Dragon Boat Festival. During a Dragon Boat Festival in China, dragon boats will travel up and down rivers and canals shooting off fireworks and throwing sticky rice packets into the water to appease ghosts. These dragon boats can be much longer than racing dragon boats with 40 or 60 people in one boat.
Australia held the International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships in 2007.
