2022 marked the 80th Anniversary of the formation of the Australian Women's Land Army (AWLA), more commonly known at the time as the "Land Girls". Modelled on Great Britain's Women's Land Army the organisation was created to allow women to replace men to meet the shortfall in the agricultural labour force, particularly following Japan's entry into the Second World War.
These women planted and tended crops - vegetables, fruit, and cotton - raised poultry and pigs, as well as meeting all other requirements to keep the agricultural businesses functioning, such as driving trucks, tractors and harvesters. At its peak, there were 3,000 women engaged in these activities.
Members of the AWLA were not accorded the same benefits as members of the other women's services. Indeed, it was not until 1985 that they were granted permission to march in the annual ANZAC Day Parade. In 1995 members were awarded the Civilian Service Medal after a Committee of Enquiry recommendation. Seven decades after the formation of the AWLA the Government officially thanked the organisation for its efforts during the War.
Redland Museum, with its rich and varied collections, is full of stories – and stories are what make theatre. Theatre Redlands, a group of experienced theatre operatives, driven by a commitment to producing high-quality community theatre, utilise the collections of the Redland Museum, to tell stories. And there are so many stories within the Museum walls!
The coming production by Theatre Redlands is a theatrical tribute to the Australian Women's Land Army, those remarkable women who "made bullets with bread".
