The Queensland Ballet provides aspiring dancers from age 8 to foster a love of the art form, leading to a full-time academy programme in partnership with the Department of Education through Kelvin Grove College for year 7-12 students. Upon completion of the Academy Program, dancers are ready to audition for the Pre-professional programme, a year's training designed for those aspiring to be in a professional dance company.
Queensland Ballet Academy's Pre-Professional Program dancers displayed their emerging talent in the annual showcase
Aspire '21.
Aspire'21 featured
Matador Suite, a traditional piece choreographed by Academy Director, Christian Tátchev, referencing the Spanish verve of the ballet
Don Quixote, and
Intimate Dialogues, a neo-classical work created by Resident Choreographer and Academy Head, Paul Boyd.
Both pieces provided sound ballet technique with the former appearing to be more polished than the latter. But perhaps
Intimate Dialogues was the piece that showcased best the reaches of their dance education by exploring nuanced emotion and expression through a range of dance techniques and group dynamics.
What was most gratifying to see was the extent to which these young people are nurtured by their mentors, seniors, benefactors and dance luminaries within the Queensland Ballet and Academy programme. This excellence in nurturing talent is perhaps foundational for the growing strength of the Queensland Ballet. It is hard not to be positive about the future of ballet when countenancing the drive and creativity of these aspiring young dancers.
