Li Cunxin presents Swan Lake in 2017

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Queensland Ballet's 2017 Season Launch. Under the guidance of Li Cunxin (artistic director) the season promises to be full of old favourites and new contemporary pieces. Ballet lovers were excited to hear that Li (Mao's Last Dancer) is at the helm until 2020, so Queensland Ballet is in good hands for many years to come.

Old favourites
First off next year will be the classic Swan Lake which Li said he had performed in his younger days under the guidance of Margot Fonteyn.

The French comedy , La Fille Mal Gardee, begins in August and is a firm family favourite.

Next is the well loved Peter Pan. If you missed it in 2015 get in early for swahbuckling swprdfights, oversized puppets and exciting flying scenes.

The annual Christmas favourite, The Nutcracker, will move to the Lyric Theatre in 2017. It will be bigger and better than ever.

Contemporary Ballets

Contemporary ballet lovers have not been forgotten. There are three: Ghost Dances, No Man's Land and Glass Concerto, which are all part of the innovative Raw program. RAW will be showing at the Playhouse all through March. We were treated to a look back at Li and his wife Mary dancing Ghost Dances in their heyday.

New Initiatives

In February, Amy Hollingsworth (Ballet Mistress) will collaborate with musician, Katie Noonan, and electric beats project cln. They'll combine dance and live music for a new multi- sensory experience called Bespoke. A new venue is home to this initiative. The Powerhouse Theatre, Brisbane Powerhouse will provide a contemporary venue for the modern Bespoke.

Meet the dancers
Season ticket holders will be invited to get up close and personal with the dancers during Dance Dialogues. Short dances and rehearsals will be held for patrons in the intimate setting of Queensland Ballet 's West End home. The first, La Danse De L'Amour, an elegant gala ball, is planned for September. Dancers will perform exclusive dances and then ball goers will be able to dance the night away along with the dancers.

There is a lot to look forward to from Queensland Ballet next year. Which will you Fall in Love with?
