Charles Dickens- perhaps one of the best English writers of all time- has written many wonderful stories, most of which are still as popular today as they were when they were first conceived. In fact, many copies of his novels still top the bestselling classics lists. Even though Dickens died over 140 years ago, his books hold just as much relevance today as they did when he wrote them.
One of his most famous novels, Oliver Twist (published in 1838) has captivated audiences the world over, especially after its adaptation into a popular West End, and then Broadway, musical production. The release of Lionel Bart's film version in 1968 sealed the deal in regards to Oliver!'s popularity, cementing the little orphan boy into people's hearts, and ensuring that his character will always be recognised in modern society.
Since the first book-to-musical adaptations were made, countless reproductions by small and large theatre companies have been performed- some sticking closely to the original script and others taking on more satirical views of the story- yet they all tell, by necessity, the same story of a young kind-hearted boy who wants to belong in a loving family.
The production will be held at the Point Lonsdale School Hall
For their 2013 production, the Queenscliffe Lighthouse Theatre Group has decided to tackle this popular musical, bringing the show to the people of Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula. Directed by Debbie Fraser, the show will feature all of the songs that we have grown to associate with Oliver!, including 'Food Glorious Food', 'Consider Yourself', 'As Long As He Needs Me' and 'Where Is Love'. Oliver!, which is comprised of a 52-member cast, includes two groups of children who will perform on alternating days, and will bring to life such popular characters as Fagin, Nancy, Bill Sykes, The Artful Dodger, and of course, Oliver.
This amateur theatre company was formed in 2001, and has produced one or two spectacular stage shows each year since, all of the highest quality. With a talented cast and crew, and a renowned Geelong director at the helm, this local production of Oliver! is one that you won't want to miss.
