If you're looking for somewhere the family can stretch their legs in Melbourne's inner north, I highly recommend a visit to Queens Park. Located between Mount Alexander road & Pasco Vale Road in Moonee Ponds, this shady oasis is the perfect place to play, picnic and socialise.
Although it's not the biggest park you'll ever visit, what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. The park is extremely well maintained and it features a large lake which is home to a plethora of birds, including ducks & a rather infamous swan. It also boasts two playgrounds which are perfect for the kiddies, has a small area for playing bocce and it is located right next door to the Moonee Ponds outdoor swimming pool.
There is a café with serves coffee and tasty vegan treats on the west side of the park and you're allowed to consume alcohol in the area between 12noon and 9pm, which makes it a convenient location for adult catch ups too.
If you enjoy exercising outdoors there are plenty of quiet areas within the park to practise yoga or you can work out with a friend on the lush green grass. Queens Park is also perfect for runners as the outside perimeter is 1.2km in total.
Perhaps my only criticism of this Moonee Ponds icon is the lack of BBQ areas. There aren't any. I can only assume the council is concerned about the cost of maintaining such facilities and wants to avoid any potential issues with vandalism. It's such a shame.
Enjoy the sun & take a walk in Queens Park this summer. It's a real gem.
