Rejoice Queenslanders. This year we have an extra public holiday. From 2012 the Queen's Birthday holiday, traditionally celebrated in June, has been transferred to the first Monday in October so we can enjoy a public holiday in the latter half of the year. The one-off bonus is that we'll also celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in June. Don't waste the long weekend staying at home on the couch. Head on out into the winter sunshine for a day trip or attend one of the many events that are happening from Saturday 9 June to Monday 11 June 2012.

[SECTION]Brisbane Racing Carnival[/SECTION]


The Brisbane Racing Carnival concludes at Eagle Farm on Saturday 9 June with AAMI Stradbroke Day. The major race is the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap where Australia's best sprinters will battle it out over 1400m.

When: Saturday 9 June 2012
Where: Eagle Farm Racecourse
What's On: A full program of racing, Fashions on the Field and a range of hospitality packages including entertainment.

[SECTION]History Alive: A Journey Through Time @ Fort Lytton[/SECTION]


Presented by the Queensland Living History Federation History Alive is two days of fun, historical re-enactments at Brisbane's Fort Lytton. Various eras will be represented and include Roman legionnaries, World War 2 soldiers and fourteenth century knights and damsels.

When: Saturday 9 June and Sunday 10 June
Where: Fort Lytton National Park, Corner of Lytton Road and South Street, Lytton
What's On: Re-enactments, stalls and displays. Gates open at 9.30 am and the event kicks off with a bang with 64 pound cannons firing at 10am.
Tickets: Family (two adults and up to four children) Day Pass $45, Weekend Pass $60
Adult Day Pass $15, Weekend Pass $25
School age children and Concession Day Pass $10, Weekend Pass $15
Children under 5 are admitted free

The famous Lifeline Bookfest is on again. Brisbane bibliophiles are finding spaces in their bookcases for all the bargains they know they'll find at the mid-year sale. Over 2 million books will be available to pore over and take home for as little as 50 cents.

When: Saturday 9 June to Tuesday 12 June
Where: Exhibition Halls 3 and 4, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, corner of Merivale and Glenelg Streets, South Bank.
What's On: Books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, board games and collectable and rare books
Cost: Entry is free. Book bargains from 50 cents.

The World Press Photo Competition, the world's leading international contest for photo-journalists, has been held annually for the last 55 years. The World Press Photo Exhibition will showcase the powerful images from the competition at Brisbane's Powerhouse during June.

When: Saturday 2 June to Sunday 24 June 2012. Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 9pm, Mondays from 9am to 5pm.

When: Wednesday 6 June to Tuesday 12 June 2012, 10am to 6pm daily.
Where: RNA Showgrounds, 600 Gregory Terrace, Bowen Hills, Brisbane
What's On: Exhibitors, seminars, food and drink outlets. Free entry into the lucky door prizes.
Cost: Adults $15, Pensioners $10, accompanied school aged children free.
