[b]The Baton has arrived in Australia!**

The Baton arrived on Christmas Day 2017 and is now on its journey to its final destination.

The Commonwealth Games will commence on 4th April, 2018 and the GC2018 (Gold Caot 2018) baton-bearers have now been announced for the journey around Australia.

From young people to some of Australia's most accomplished and well known public figures, these people have the privilege of being selected to be a part of history.

All in all, there will be more than a million steps taken to bring the Baton to its final destination, the GC2018 Opening Ceremony. You can read a full list of baton bearers from around Australia here .

The Queen's Baton has been specially designed to capture the unlimited energy of the Gold Coast and is an inspiring symbol that will connect the Commonwealth with Australia, Queensland and the Gold Coast. Each host nation of the Commonwealth Games has the responsibility to create a Queen's Baton. This Baton has to reflect "design, cultural and human values" and it must also genuinely engage and inspire the Commonwealth to come together to celebrate GC2018.

The GC2018 Relay will be the longest and the most accessible ever, not just passing through, but spending time in each region it visits. It started it's journey on 13th March 2017 at Buckingham Palace, and will travel on an epic 388-day journey through all nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

The Queen's Baton will arrive on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on 4th April 2018, where a representative of Her Majesty will remove the message from the Baton, and read it out loud to officially open the Games!

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation appointed Designworks, a small Brisbane company, to design and manufacture the GC2018 Queen's Baton. The Baton's shape and the contrasting materials are likened to surfboards, surfboats and other surf craft heritage. It has smooth lines, a perfect surface, and the crisp changes between the different materials give the feeling of being able to glide over as well as through the water.

Apparently, light reflects off the metal stringer, which is supposed to imitate the sun striking the Gold Coast skyscrapers and the twinkling at sunrise and sunset. The plastic material used in the making of the Baton is re-cycled plastic thus raising awareness for sustainable practices. This plastic was collected from the ocean, waterways, beaches and surrounding areas of the Gold Coast. It then had to be sorted, cleaned and melted to create the shape and all this was done in-house at Designworks.

In its fascinating trip to reach its final destination, modern technology has been incorporated into the Baton function. The Baton has its own App that will be used to "control the different settings for the energy efficient LED colour illumination and battery status". The GPS technology built in will allow the Baton to be tracked as it travels around the Commonwealth.

[b]So, where will the Baton be and when?**

The Deputy Lord Mayor Jemma Green said the Queen's Baton would be carried through East Perth and the heart of the city, ending with a community celebration at the Supreme Court Gardens. On the Western Australian leg of its journey, the Baton will travel through greater Perth and visit destinations such as Rottnest Island, Kings Park, the new Perth Stadium and Perth's famous beaches.

The baton will travel to Perth from Bunbury on 23rd February, arriving at Churchill Park in Rockingham about 5.30 pm. The next community event will be at the channel swim event hub on Rottnest Island where the baton is expected to arrive about 10.42 am on 24th February.

From there, it will return to Bathers Beach in Fremantle about 12.51 pm, then head east to Sir James Mitchell Park in South Perth and Perth Stadium in Burswood. The last community event for the Saturday will be at the Supreme Court Gardens in Perth.

On 25th February, the first event will be in Kings Park where the baton is due about 10 am, then another will be at the WA Athletics Stadium as the relay passes through an hour later. It will continue west to City Beach, arriving at the foreshore precinct about 1.30 pm and turn north to reach Scarborough Beach an hour later.

City of Joondalup will host an event with live music, free children's activities and food vendors at Whitfords Nodes Park in Hillarys to mark the arrival of the relay baton bearers about 5.30 pm that Sunday.

City of Wanneroo will host two events the following day as the baton arrives at Quinns Beach about 10.30 am and central Wanneroo about noon.

City of Swan will hold its community event at the Midland Town Hall as the relay arrives mid-afternoon and moves through to Guildford on 26th February.
