I just can't get enough of the local fresh blue mussels from the Seafood and Oyster Spot in the Queen Victoria Market.
To enjoy the freshness, I always consume them on the day of purchase. Cleaning can be a tiny bit tedious as I usually give the shells a good scrub, pull away the beards and rinse them in a few rounds of cold water to remove all traces of sediment.
Easy to cook, they are plump and juicy with the taste of the sea. You know they are ready as soon as the shells open.
Mussels are delicious in a wide range of recipes from European to Asian.
Apart from their deliciousness, mussels are great for your health. Low in calories and fat, but rich in protein, mussels are also a rich source of vitamin B-12 and C, folate, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc.
At an affordable AUD6 per kilo at the Queen Victoria Market, everyone can slurp up their succulent goodness.
