Once when out for a girl's afternoon tea at the stately Windsor Hotel in Melbourne, we met a rich American widow who had caught a taxi from the dock at Port Melbourne up to one of Melbourne's most iconic high tea experiences.

She told us she was travelling around the world on the Queen Mary and my jaw dropped that people could actually live their lives in such a rich manner. Imagine travelling in floating five-star luxury and then being able to stop off at new countries and then nicking out and experiencing each port's most iconic attractions.

My kind of life.

Because of this meeting, I was excited to learn that Australians are now being offered the chance to experience the luxury of the Queen Mary 2 in short trips that won't break the bank and will take them around their own vast shoreline.

Let's start with what you get. The Queen Mary 2, is arguably the most magnificent liner ever built. It is the 9th longest in the world. It has fifteen restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, a ballroom, a theatre, and the first planetarium at sea. There are opulent public areas, extravagant dining rooms, theatres, lounges and 15 decks to relax on.

There is a sweeping staircase in the main dining room and the six-storey grand lobby. The original artworks on the walls are valued at more than $US5 million. The following trips are all inclusive so that fares include all meals entertainment, port charges and taxes.

During February and March 2018, there will be five cruises enabling you to experience all this majesty. They range from two to six nights aboard QM2 beginning with a four-night itinerary from Fremantle to Adelaide on February 12 for $1,209 per person twin share.

Other scheduled voyages include Adelaide to Melbourne, two nights, from $629 on February 16, Melbourne to Sydney, two nights, on February 22 from $519 twin share and Sydney to Brisbane two nights on March 09 from $719.

There is also a 12-night Fremantle to Melbourne on February 12 from $1,979.

As Mary's sister ship Queen Elizabeth is in the region about the same time there is a seven-night voyage aboard her from Auckland to Sydney on February 23 from $2079 per person.

Don't for one moment think you'll be bored as there are outdoor swimming pools, deck games, basketball and paddle tennis, classes in painting, computers, bridge, cocktail making and others too numerous to list.

The library holds 8000 books and magazines and movies are shown in the cinema or you can journey through the universe in the ship's planetarium. Entertainment includes a jazz band and a veritable cast of entertainers, comedians and musicians. Formal-dress nights are held regularly and there is even a nightclub.

There are six restaurants, one cafe, a pub and more than three bars that serve food, though the majority of passengers dine in the 1347-seat Britannia Restaurant. Think chateaubriand, lobster, rack of lamb and duck a l'orange and wonderful high teas.
