The Quarantine Station stands on North Head - at the entrance to Sydney Harbour.

Manly quarantine station is a place of historical interest , you may consider it to be an ancient place of obsolete purpose, but think again, the station was still used for quarantine just 40 years ago. The last ship to be quarantined was the Nikki Maru in 1972. The quarantine station was in operation from the 1833 to 1984.

These days the quarantine station has many uses, including private functions, accommodation, nature walks and day tours, however my visit was for something very different, an extreme ghost tour. These tours are held on the first Friday each month, the tours are X rated so attendees need to be at least 18 years of age (proof of age is requested). The tour includes some extreme and raw accounts of gruesome and bizarre stories, course language may be used.

If you travel by car, you need to park in the public car park and board a shuttle bus into the quarantine station. This is to protect the many diverse flora and fauna in the area. The bus journey to the reception courtyard takes just a few minutes. You can walk in, the walk takes about 15 minutes, but if arriving at night there are no street lights, so its very dark and the road is not well maintained.

We gathered in the courtyard where our tour guide introduced herself and gave a brief description of the few hours that lay ahead. EMF Meter/Detectors, an instrument used by to measure electromagnetic energy, were issued prior to setting off on the tour. We were a little amused and mocked its ability, but were expectant of many mysterious occurrences.

For the most part, the tour was simply fun. There was a hint of paranormal cynicism in the air, our guide narrated throughout the tour, including historical facts which were mixed with legend and a little embellished storytelling. Some members of the group took great delight in "trying" to scare others which was humorous but quite unsuccessful - that was until ...

We reached the workers hut, this is a quaint little hut, painted white with wide verandas and decorated with retro furniture from the 60's. Our tour guide explained there was no electricity inside, so flash lights only. As we entered, an eerie coldness was present. We each explored the sparsely furnished house, strangely everyone grew silent. The group dispersed around the home, the bedrooms, kitchen and lounge room, quietly and respectfully we took in the atmosphere of this old home, suddenly someone screamed and ran out of the house, she later explained as she sat in a chair which was situated in the corner of the lounge room she felt someone stroke her hair, immediately after she had a sharp pain in her left side as though someone had poked her rather hard, at the time I scoffed and decided it was another attempt to scare participants. When I arrived home and downloaded the photos I'd taken in the house, I found this photo

which clearly shows an anomaly - "an irregular image that appears on photos or video taken by film, or digital media."
The smoked image and bright light is exactly as downloaded; it has not been touched up or altered in any way, the girl was sitting in a chair just to the left of the photo.

Until this night, I had considered ghost hunting to be a bit of fun, tongue in cheek and a good excuse for a night out with the girls, I do now feel a higher level of respect and wonder "what if".

Ghost tours at the quarantine station include Spirit Investigator, Family Ghostly, Adult Ghost, Ghostly Sleepovers and the extreme Ghost Tours. A tour guide is appointed to each group, large groups may have two guides.

If you do have a must share experience you can add a description to the tour review page .

Strict foot dress policies are in place, no sandals or thongs. You will be turned away! Believe me, good running shoes should be worn when visiting the Quarantine Station.
