Chinese lunar new year is almost upon us and Queensland Symphony Orchestra is tuning up for a marvelous evening of year of the monkey celebration. Brisbane City Hall Will be bouncing to the beat of traditional Chinese music and performances this Thursday, February 11.

A representative of QSO says, "Under the baton of Asia's pre-eminent young conductor, Darrell Ang, the concert will feature leading virtuosos from China, and will see the traditional Chinese erhu played with the Orchestra for the first time." Some of you may know the two stringed instrument, the erhu by its other name, 'Chinese violin'.

Internationally famous performer Ma Xiaohui will be coaxing beautiful tones from the aforementioned erhu, while Chinese pop-turned-opera star and legendary mezzo-soprano Aoyun Gerile will make the art of generating beautiful tones from her own voice appear deceptively simple.

We will also be treated two performances by Chinese cellist Li-Wei Qin, who was hailed by the New York Times as a performer who "has a meltingly beautiful tone, flawless centered intonation and an ironclad technique".

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra's representative reveals, "On piano will be Yingdi Sun, a musical prodigy, who came to international attention in 2005 when he won the first prize at the 7th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in the Netherlands. He was the first Chinese winner of this prestigious competition."

Crowds will also have the chance to enjoy a composition combining traditional Chinese tones with those of Western instrumental music Reflet d'un temps disparu (Reflection of a vanished time) by Qigang Chen.

This concert marks the start of 2016's WorldBeat series and is presented under the proud patronage of His Excellency Mr Ma Zhaoxu, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China in Australia.

So if all that sounds like your cup of Oolong, book your tickets via the QSO website.
