What father doesn't like the roar of an engine, revere the whine of a gear change and the enjoy the feel of a powerful car through the steering wheel. By taking a quick trip out to Willowbank to visit Queensland Raceway, you can give Dad a day to remember this Father's Day.
After a pleasant forty minute drive from Brisbane City through the countryside, the experience begins with an instructional briefing, where drivers will be prepared for driving a V8 race car. Tips on handling the car, how to take corners, braking techniques are discussed, as well as the all important track map, so that Dad's are able to plan the best line and fastest route around the course.
Next stop is pit lane where Dad will be fitted with his own race suit and helmet. It is at this point that his excitement will start to build as he begins to look the part. So that every car enthusiast is happy, drivers are then given the choice of a Holden or Ford to drive - couldn't have them driving the opposition.
Dad is now ready to be strapped in behind the wheel, ready for the first lap. A qualified instructor sits beside the driver and helps them, through in-helmet communication, to get the most out of their experience. Advice is given on how to approach each turn at exactly the right speed, gear change times, when to brake and the best line to take through the course. While drivers aren't actually racing, there are no speed limits and drivers are able to overtake other drivers on the track.
The number of times around the track depends on how much money you're prepared to spend on Dad, but it the usual experience is for five laps at a cost of $199. There is also an eight lap option, or a chance to have three "Hot Laps", seated in the back of the car while a professional driver flies around the circuit.
To make sure Dad remembers and can relive his drive of a lifetime, there is an option to purchase a USB which is loaded with an in car digital video, recorded as they drive. At a cost of $45, it is well worth it to remind him of the brownie points you've accrued when it comes to asking for that next little favour! Dads will also come away with a certificate and a photo to remember the day by, which are included in the initial cost.
If you don't plan to go for your race on Father's Day, you may like to link up the race experience with a visit to the RAAF Amberley Heritage Museum if your father has an interest in military aircraft. The museum opens on the third Sunday of every month from 9am - 3pm. Entry is free and the collection houses a range of displays, including a World War II Boston Bomber, a Vietnam-era Canberra bomber, Caribou airlifter, Sabre and Mirage fighter jets, F-111s and Sioux and Iroquois helicopters. See
here for more information.
For a day unlike no other, Dads of all ages will enjoy the V8 car experience. The only issue will be how to top it next year ... perhaps a fighter plane joy-ride?
