As a child, nearly every kid in my neighbourhood had a
guinea pig at one time or another. I remember my parents purchasing a female for me only to find out she was pregnant, and we then had several more. After a while, Dad wasn't happy about having no grass as guinea pigs have a great appetite for your lawn. I eventually grew out of that craze and then the guinea pigs were sold onto another kid for his enjoyment.
The
Qld Guinea Pig Refuge (QGPR) is a not-for-profit community services organisation and they have a no euthanasia policy. The dedicated foster carers and volunteers work hard at rescuing and finding homes for lost, unwanted and mistreated guinea pigs while donating this time and money to the organisation. There are strict adoption procedures. The no euthanasia policy means the organisation puts one hundred percent into treatment and care of the guinea pigs back to a healthy state, yet there are sometimes where treatment cannot help them and there is no other choice.
The Qld Guinea Pig Refuge is turning 5 and they are celebrating with an event to be held on 6th October 2018 at 504 Bracken Ridge Road,
Bald Hills . The event will commence at 10.00am and conclude at 3.00pm. Although it is free to attend, you need to register on the Eventbrite
website .
There will be heaps of activities including face-painting and a jumping castle for the kids, piggy judging competitions, guinea pig games and competitions, goodie bags, food and drinks and much more. Adoptions will also be available on the day. For up-to-date information about this event, check out the Qld Guinea Pig Refuge
Facebook page.
