[SECTION]Observation Deck[/SECTION]
High in the clouds above Surfers Paradise looms the needle-like spire of the landmark building known simply as Q1.

Primarily a residential property with 526 luxury apartments and a whopping 11 elevators, Q1 has a range of commercial tenants at street level and the Skypoint Observation Deck on top.

On Level 77 is the café/bar of the same name, which is positioned on a slightly raised mezzanine level in the centre of the space. The Skypoint Observation Deck encircles the café/bar like a massive donut, providing an uninterrupted 360 degree viewing platform safely ensconced by continuous panels of highly-reinforced floor-to-ceiling glass.

The beach lies a dizzying 230 metres below, and the world's fastest elevator rushes you there in an ear-popping 42.7 seconds.

The views are breathtaking and it's fun to see how far you are from all the major cities around the world. It might be pure whimsy, but for a fleeting moment it seems almost possible that if you look in the right direction you might just catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower or the Great Wall of China in the distance.

[ADVERT]Newcomers to the Gold Coast should come straight here to get their bearings and to gain a real appreciation for the natural beauty of the area, away from all the street-level noise, glitz and touristic souvenir shops. Locals can apply for an Annual Pass that permits unlimited entries to the registered cardholder for the meagre sum of $32 a year. A true bargain if ever there was one.

If you are not a local and your budget is a little thin, pack a few sandwiches and a bottle of water so you can spend the whole day on the Observation Deck for the price of admission. There are plenty of comfy chairs scattered around the deck, but be aware that the mezzanine tables and chairs are for the use of Level 77 café patrons only. The Observation Deck is also the departure point for the Skypoint Climb .

[SECTION]Level 77 Food, Drink and Entertainment[/SECTION]

The Level 77 café/bar is fully licensed and open from 7am daily, until closing.

They offer a continental buffet breakfast until 10.30am, a selection of cooked breakfast dishes until 11am, and an all-day snack menu from 11am. Breakfast starts from $15 and the all-day menu offers a selection of popular snacks with most priced from $21-$26. They are not cheap, and if you buy a meal here it will effectively double the cost of the day's outing.

The coffee and tea are priced much the same as any other café or coffee shop, which makes them an affordable option. The smoothies are a bit pricey at $9.50, considering they seem to disappear in the blink of an eye. I can vouch for the Sea View Berry Antioxidant smoothie, a very trendy and tasty combination of strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, Goji berries, LSA (linseed, sunflower seeds and almonds), chia and apple juice.

The Level 77 bar is fully licensed, and operates as an 18-and-over cocktail bar on Friday and Saturday nights. Sunday sunsets come with live entertainment and keep an eye out for cocktail specials.

[SECTION]Parking and Transportation Options[/SECTION]
There are parking spaces allocated in the basement carpark (entry via Hamilton Avenue) specifically marked as Skypoint Observation Deck. There are also visitor car spaces. It is a good idea to give your rego number to staff when you purchase your Skypoint ticket to avoid being towed away.

On-street parking is mostly two-hour 'pay-and-display', and parking inspectors have no mercy. There is also a new off-street Parking Station one block to the south (corner of Markwell Avenue).

The new Gold Coast Light Rail should be operational by June 2014, and there is a station right out front of Q1.
