I have two burger connoisseurs in the family: one is a six year old who is picky to say the least and the other, well, let's just say that he still thinks of burgers from Milk Bars with affection. Both love a burger but aren't allowed them as often they'd like. Our most recent expedition in search of the perfect burger took us to Purple Gorilla in Woolloongabba.

Sometimes, no matter how health conscious you are, only a burger will do. And when the craving hits, you want a good one, you want to make it count.

First impressions of were promising, there are few tables to eat-in but all were taken with some lone rangers also perched at the bar along the window. The staff were friendly and patient as we took a while to read and understand the menu.

Every burger joint likes to make their burgers sound unique, although usually once you read through the list you can recognize your favourite. It was no different here.

Purple Gorilla's point of difference is that they call their beer battered chips "Planks". The good news is that they are worthy of the extra attention, they were beautifully crisp and lightly salted with rosemary salt. They also offer slightly out of the ordinary dipping sauces – the chilli apple chutney is worth a try.

Service was relatively quick compared to many dine-in cafes although our meal did come in stages which was a bit disappointing for the kids. As most parents know, when serving families, it always pays to get the kids' food out fast as parents are happy to wait as long as the children are busy. Our six year old who had ordered a "PG Kids" burger also thought his burger was "way too small" which is worth considering as he eats like a sparrow.

is a decent burger and compared well with bigger chains such as Grill'd. Next time you just have to have a burger, give it a shot.
