Live Aussie theatre in a pub

Last Wednesday I headed to Pub Theatre1 by Moment to Moment Theatre Co at the iconic Dan O'Connell in Carlton. Moment to Moment have curated a series of ten minute Australian plays performed by local actors and for $20 you can see 6 plays, or see one and only pay $5. What a bargain! Book your tickets here

But is the work worth seeing?

I was impressed with the quality of the writing and performance, and with Dan O'Connell's big theatre room in the back of the pub with its own private bar. Brilliant! There is nothing worse than being thirsty during a show or having to drink your beverage out of a plastic cup. Not at the Dan, all cold beverages are served in glass, as they should be!

My favourite shows were Shirley Vs The Possums written by Camilla Maxwell and The Bench by Holly Brindley, and Last Drinks by Greg Gould. These plays have very dark themes laced with comedy and some stand out performances particularly by Louise Corbett, Mindy Fyfe and Abbey-Rose Leed in The Bench a play about the perils of high school, and a resolve for retribution.

The night occurs in two main sections, six short plays divided by an interval, starting at 7:00 pm and wrapping up by 9:30 pm - not too late for a school night.

So if you missed Pub Theatre 1, why not check out Pub Theatre 2 at the Hawthorn Hotel this week 15-17 February and at The Post in St Kilda from 20-22 February.

Be a good sport and support your local actors and playwrights.
