Public Observatories in South Australia

Observatory South Australia

Do you look up at the stars and wonder? If not, you should.

The universe is enormous, eternal and dwarfs any problem on Earth, which is why I find star watching so comforting.

There are a number of observatories, groups and even a planetarium in Adelaide where people gather to look at worlds beyond and ponder the massiveness of it all

The Stockport Observatory is located in the hamlet of Stockport 6kms north-east of Hamley Bridge, about 80kms north of Adelaide.

The Heights Observatory is located about 15km north-east of the city.

The Tooperang Hall Observatory
is 60km south of Adelaide on the Meadows to Goolwa Road.

The Middleback Station Observatory
on Eyre Peninsula is on the road between Whyalla and Iron Knob (around 8 hours' drive from Adelaide). I think this is the best one, because of the distance from the city emphases the vastness of the universe.

Alternatively you want to see the stars on a cloudy day or in air conditioned comfort, Adelaide has a planetarium on the first floor of Building P of the University of South Australia at the Mawson Lakes Campus. The planetarium is open to the public the first Saturday of every months at 2.45pm and other times by request. Click here for more details

The planetarium consists of a Zeiss Jena projector standing in the centre of a dome-shaped room with seating. The projector presents the relative positions and brightness of around 5,000 stars visible from the southern hemisphere. It's magical and belittling feeling.

If you want to get serious about it Astronomical Society of South Australia is the oldest society in Australia (founded in 1892) and its membership is open everyone.
