The Proud to be Yarra Festival is being held at the iconic Abbotsford Convent (in the Sacred Heart Courtyard) at 1 Heliers street, Abbotsford on the 22nd of February from 10am to 4pm. The Convent and the Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) are proud to bring you this festival that promotes sustainable living. The intention of this inaugural year of the Festival that is expected to attract between 1000 and 1500 people throughout the day, is to make it an annual and growing event.

Established by the Yarra City Council in 2010 and an independent for-purpose organisation, The Yarra Energy Foundation has a huge ambition. Their aim is to achieve a zero carbon future in the City of Yarra by 2020. The educational workshops and information stalls contribute to making changes both big and small in the lives of families, young renters and professionals to achieve a cleaner, greener and smarter City of Yarra. The range of community programs, information, products and services that highlight and celebrate sustainable living will be brought to you in the form of 25 to 30 stall holders.

There will be a lot of practical demonstrations, workshops, 'live' music (local amazing bands in the Shadow Electric Band room) and fun activities for the kids. Some of the themes of the event will be around understanding solar - the who, what, where and why from those who have done it, sustainable renovations, energy efficiency advice and products, water efficiency, gardening workshops, cooking demonstrations, maintenance and repair workshops, sustainable lifestyle products, a clothing and toy exchange for kids, women and men, poster design competition (colouring in for younger kids), short local sustainability films and much more.

There will be plenty to eat with a coffee cart, gelati, bike and blend smoothies, and a BBQ, not to mention the eateries on the Convent premises such as Lentil as Anything, Kappaya Japanese Soul Food Cafe, Bursaria, Cam's Cafe, Convent Bakery and the Boiler Room Bar & Pizzeria.

You are encouraged to bring your bills along with you and the team from the Victorian Government's Switch On and My Power Planner will be at the Festival to help you work out if you are getting the best deal on your electricity. You can still make a difference even if you're not a home owner and only renting. The Liveability website has a free 24 page rent smart booklet you can download with tips for each room of the house that will help you improve your rental home's efficiency, making it more economical to run and helping to reduce your electricity, gas and water bills. If you're like to join Yarra Project Zero, take the pledge. If you'd like to get involved, CLICK HERE. Why not join the Yarra Project Zero Community on Facebook to stay updated. You can also join their Event Page so they have an idea of numbers that are coming. There are plenty of parking spaces opposite the convent at very reasonable rates. I need to be there too as there's so much to learn and to educate ourselves to make a difference. See you there !

A very worthy goal, and a very ambitious one too. I admire the aim, but don't see zero carbon happening by 2020. Hope I can be proved wrong.
