Newly refurbished, the boutique riverboat Proud Mary now offers two-night and five-night itinerary cruises as well as two-hour luncheon cruises along the Murray River. I recently had the opportunity to check out its lunch cruise from Mannum which casts off every Monday.





The Murray River is just stunning with an abundance of birdlife and spectacular scenery. Departing at 10:45am, the cruise heads downstream passing beautiful willow trees along the riverbanks. These willows were planted to mark the river as riverboat captains of the early 1900s found it hard to navigate its immense lagoons. Birdlife thrives here today because of these willows. A bit of commentary was provided on board but not much.



The onboard lunch was average and quite basic I think for the cost of $69 per person. There were chicken, ham, salads, bread rolls and a fruit platter. Massive queues as about 40 people tried to reach for the rather small buffet table.



The cruise though was very smooth and calm, perfect for those suffering motion sickness (like myself). I've also been aboard the Murray Princess for its three-night discovery cruise and it was fantastically pleasant, unlike ocean cruising whatsoever. Just love the Murray River!
