What is the Astor?
The Astor Theatre is one of Melbourne's finest and most iconic landmarks. The theatre is the last single screen cinema of its kind in continuous operation in Melbourne, and has proudly been screening movies and hosting other functions for over 75 years.
When you walk into the Astor Theatre, you get the sense of being involved in something big, in something magical. With seating for 1000 people, you might think that only a small amount of that space could be taken up. Well, you'd be wrong. I personally have only been to the Astor just a few times but each time the Astor has been positively packed with an excited audience.
Why does the Astor need saving?
The building The Astor Theatre operates in was purchased by St Michael's Grammar School five years ago. However, the school has not responded to the cinema's efforts to secure a new lease, and there are fears that when the current lease expires, St Michael's intends to close the building before re-opening as a private school performing arts centre and uniform shop.
What will happen at the Campaign Launch?
There will be a free showing of Labyrinth, free popcorn, tours and celebrity guests. Plus you'll get to meet like-minded people and help save one of Melbourne's landmarks!
