Built in 1942, was one of the communication centres established across metropolitan Adelaide during World War II. It had a blast wall and a thick roof. Its purpose was to coordinate the local civil defence response to air raids. Operational staff would receive messages, report damage and maintain contact as part of their duties.

The shelter has since been included on the heritage list and is open to the public at various times throughout the year. Tours are conducted by volunteers from the local history group. All they ask for is a gold coin donation.

The shelter's surrounding garden area is accessible between 8am and sunset. Visitors are welcome to spend time viewing the mural, honour boards and information panels. South Australian artist Ella Simpson designed and created the mural after being inspired by a local air raid warden's diary entry. As for the honour boards, they list the names of Prospect men and women who had served in the war.

Located on Willcox Avenue, the shelter is relatively easy to find. Simply look out for the Prospect Oval and you'll see it nearby. For more information, please head to www.prospectairraidshelter-adelaide.com.au .
