Are you a history buff or do you like having more knowledge of the history associated with Australia's involvement in the Second World War? On Sunday 14th November 2021, the Prospect Local History Group is holding public tours of the Prospect Air Raid Shelter . 1942 was the year in which the shelter was built and today its history still holds a significant place in what was some of the darkest days of the War.

In conjunction with the City of Prospect , the Prospect Local History Group has brought new life to the shelter with upgrades to landscaping, honour boards, murals, seating and display panels with special recognition to the civil defence effort in the area under the leadership of former Prospect Mayor, Charlie Williamson.



A short film will be shown to the visitors, which illustrates the efforts made to prepare the population in the event of an air attack. Through movies made today, we can only imagine what was going through the minds of those people not knowing how long they would need to stay there or what was happening above ground and to their loved ones in the war.

If you are thinking of attending this event, it is essential for you to wear closed footwear as there are steep steps to climb for the tour of the interior of the shelter. If you are bringing your children, please note that they must be supervised at all times and no climbing on the structure or running about is allowed. A handrail has been fitted inside the shelter for your safety, so you are asked to please use it at all times.

Although this tour is FREE, a gold coin donation would be appreciated for the upkeep of the shelter All volunteers running the tours have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the organisers will comply with whatever COVID requirements are in force at the time.

Tours run between 2.00pm and 4.00pm on Sunday 14th November 2021. People will be shown through in small groups. Please register your attendance through Eventbrite .
