A fresh new cafe with a market-fresh menu
If you're a regular breakfast person and frequently wake up wanting to try something new but you're stuck thinking of somewhere to go that you haven't tried before, you're in luck.

Proper & Son is now open at the South Melbourne Markets.

Proper & Son is not only the new kid on the block at the South Melbourne Markets, but as it draws its menu from what's available, fresh and in-season at the market, the menu changes weekly. Chef and owner Eugene Lavery has certainly hit the right note bringing his years of experience into this tasty little place.

The open kitchen style cafe is open on the regular market days with rumour that extended hours are on the horizon.

Proper & Son has all those little added extras that make it feel like a place you want to settle in with your weekend paper. Little extras you wouldn't expect from your average run-of-the-mill cafe, like fresh cucumber, lemon or lime slices in the table water, and a killer-good cup of coffee (and trust me, I don't say this about many coffee places!)

The open air kitchen of Proper & Son. It's clean, crisp and the service is fabulous.

Their breakfast menu is anything but the typical eggs and smashed avocado fare. With items such as a french toast made with a brioche bun, poached pear and honey crumble (which we tried) - it comes out looking like one of the prettiest dishes we've seen at a cafe in a very long while.

French toast that was almost too pretty to eat....almost.

While there are also options like pork sausage with mushrooms, egg and feta salad, as well as a steak and eggs dish for those keen on a hearty breaky, we allowed our inner sweet tooth to take over and also tried the banana bread with honeycomb butter, also looking beautiful.

We could go on about the menu, but really the absolute delight about Proper & Son is that you won't ever need to be stuck having the same ol' thing for breakfast. There's always something new and you can enjoy an amazing little hotspot with some great service, top notch coffee and something tasty to try each and every weekend.

It's sort of like finding a new amazing place to enjoy your Sunday morning breakfast without the risk you won't like it. How can you not love that?

Oh and we forgot to mention the mouth-watering cabinet of freshly made pastries, sweets and all things delicious that you can take away for later!

All this breakfast talk aside, Proper & Son also serves lunch for those later risers or those keen on a little market shopping first. It's already on our radar to test out the lunch menu ASAP.

Proper & Son is located in shop 14 and 15 of the South Melbourne Markets. It has a street frontage as well as access from inside the market. No reservations required, just rock on up (you'll be so glad you did!)
