The curse and the gift of beautiful minds

This January, Ensemble Theatre is kicking off their 2014 season with a production of Proof, by celebrated American playwright David Auburn.

Proof, which premiered Off-Broadway in May 2000, was awarded the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play and was also adapted as a feature film in 2005, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Hope Davis, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

This acclaimed play centres on four characters; Catherine, a young woman who has spent many years caring for her brilliant but unstable father Robert, a famous mathematician.

Over a long weekend, Catherine receives a visit from her estranged older sister Claire and also attracts unwanted attention from the kindly Hal, a 28 year old Ph.D. student who idolises her father and his creative mathematical work.

Unexpectedly a burgeoning romance ensues between Catherine and Hal, but the discovery of a mysterious notebook forces Catherine to confront her great fear; just how much of her father's madness or genius has she inherited?

This much admired play has captivated audiences around the world and comes to Sydney by arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd, on Behalf of Paradigm, New York.

The Ensemble Theatre production will be directed by Sandra Bates and stars Adriano Cappelletta, Catherine McGraffin, Matilda Ridgway and Michael Ross.
