Can love survive during the Vietnam War era?
If you were around in the 60's & 70's and can remember the Vietnam War you will want to read this book. If you weren't old enough to remember the times and the impact on Australian society, you MUST read this book.

Peter Winter is a Vietnam Veteran and the author of this insightful story. A blend of fact and fiction; readers are taken on a journey from teenage innocence in the 60's, through to one soldiers eye witness account of the Vietnam War.

We follow the main characters in the war zone and back home in Adelaide and are brought out the other side to lives that will never be the same.

Promises is the story of Rowan, a quiet country lad who meets Priscilla, a suburban Adelaide girl. Although she is wheelchair bound, Rowan quickly discovers she has a fighting spirit and a strong sense of independence. As their friendship and love grows, Rowan is faced with conscription into the Army and the Vietnam War.

As we follow Rowan's life through army training at Puckapunyal and eventually to Vietnam we are taken into the hostile jungle and experience like never before, the day to day feelings of a soldier at the time.

Rowan and his mates share highs and lows during their deployment but no one is prepared for the backlash they receive on returning to a place they called home.

Priscilla meanwhile is struggling with her own conflicting experiences of supporting the man she loves while watching the unfolding protests around her.

The greatest test is how their relationship will survive having experienced opposite lives in the tumultuous times.

With his first-hand experience, Peter Winter has captured the emotions of the era and takes the reader into the turmoil of a country divided. In his own thought provoking words he is able to portray the roller coaster of issues that so many servicemen dealt with at the time and ever since.

Promises will transport you to another time and place in Australia's history and have you wanting to know how these likeable characters will come through the uncertain times.

Promises is available from Murray Books in Hahndorf and at all good book stores.
